A BATTLE WORTH FIGHTING-POVERTY
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Poverty literally means living below the average standard of living. It is a condition that has creepled the ambition of hundreds of its captives. The yardstick to measure the standard of a nation is to measure the rate of poverty in that nation.
In Nigeria today, eradicating poverty is one of the top agenda of the government. Despite this, 63% of the rural dwellers live below the poverty level of 1 dolar per day. Statistical data shows that the poverty level in the country was 28% in 1980. It rose to 70% in 1999, and later to 54.5% in 2004. We are somewhere at about 50%. That implies that we have over 70 milion Nigeria in poverty. The factor responsible for this is that population grew more than the economic. The population grew grometrically while food grew arithmetically.
Infectious diseases like cholera, dysentry, tuberculosis, etc has greately affect the people. in addition, wars, famine, anti- social vices, HIV/AIDS, etc are all effect of poverty.
Delay in the release of fund and implementation of programmes are some of the problems facing the eradication of poverty. Fund that is suppose to be use for programmes that will support the eradication of poverty are being diverted. Corruption must be checked if the battle against poverty will be achieved.
The government should establish :
1. Microfinance banks where loans will be given to small scale traders with minimal or no insterest.
2. Skills acquisition programmes centers.
For poveryty to be eradicated, all hands must be on deck. We must ensure we become involved in this fight.
